Diane spent more than thirty years as an elementary teacher. That experience taught her something every board decision should start with: schools exist for students. When the focus drifts to politics or adult disagreements, it's children who lose ground — and those lost months are hard to win back.
Keeping the main thing the main thing
District 3 is one of the fastest-growing areas in Horry County, and growth brings pressure — crowded classrooms, new construction, stretched resources. The temptation is to let logistics and politics crowd out the actual mission. Diane's job, as she sees it, is to keep pulling the conversation back to the student.
That means meeting learners where they are. A child reading below grade level, a gifted student who needs a bigger challenge, an English-language learner, a student with an IEP — each one is “all children” too. A district that's truly focused on every student builds the supports so none of them slip through.
It's not a slogan. It's a filter for decisions: when a vote comes up, the first question is always whether it helps kids learn.
